Changing your system from a wireless to a wired setup

Connecting any one of your Sonos products to your home router with an Ethernet cable will put your system into a wired setup. In a wired setup, the product connected to your router will broadcast a dedicated wireless network for Sonos to operate on.

  1. Ensure that the Sonos product you plan to connect to your router has already been added to your Sonos system. We do not recommend using the Sub or surround speakers as the wired products. If the product is brand new, place it near your router, connect it to power and follow the steps below to add it to your system:

On iOS or Android: From the Settings tab, tap System > Add Product or Add Boost or Bridge and follow the on-screen prompts to add this product to your Sonos system.
  2. Connect the supplied Ethernet cable into the back of the Sonos product, then plug the other end of the cable into the back of your home’s router. With most Ethernet cables, you will hear a click sound when it is correctly plugged into the Ethernet port.
  3. After the Ethernet cable is connected, your Sonos products may disappear temporarily from the Sonos app while the Sonos dedicated wireless network is being created. Wait approximately 1 minute and ensure all of your Sonos products are displaying under the Rooms view in your Sonos app. If one or more of your products does not reappear in the Sonos app after a few minutes, try restarting that product by unplugging it from power, waiting 5 seconds, and plugging it back into power. You can verify that your system is now in a wired setup using the steps outlined at the end of this article.
  4. Once your system is successfully configured in a wired setup, it is recommended that you remove the WiFi password from your Sonos system by performing the following steps:

Sonos app for iOS or Android: From the Settings tab, tap System > Network > Wireless Setup. On the Wireless Setup screen, click the button that says "Reset". Then click "Done" on the next screen.

Changing your system from a wired to a wireless setup

If you would prefer to have your Sonos system connect over your home’s WiFi network, it is possible to switch from a wired to a wireless setup.

On iOS or Android: From the Settings tab, tap System > Network > Wireless Setup.

During the Wireless Setup, you will be prompted to enter the password for your home’s WiFi network. At the end of the process, you will be instructed to unplug the Ethernet cable that connects your Sonos product and router.

How can I check if my system is in a wireless or wired setup?

Follow the steps below to access the "About my Sonos System" screen on your Sonos Controller App.

On iOS or Android: From the Settings tab, tap System > About My System
Sonos Controller App for Mac: Select Sonos > About my Sonos System
Sonos Controller App for PC: Select Help > About my Sonos System

The About My Sonos System screen displays all of the Sonos products connected to your household, and whether they are connected to your home’s WiFi (wireless setup) or the dedicated Sonos network (wired setup). Look for a row under each player that says “WM”.

“WM=0” means your system is in a wired setup
“WM=1” means your system is in a wireless setup
"WM=2" means the device is bonded as a surround speaker or Sub to a Sonos home theater product in a wireless setup.
