Overview

Windows operating system restored with StorageCraft® Recovery Environments fails to boot in to Windows. System start results in firmware error messages such as:

No Operating system Detected No Operating system was loaded No UEFI-compatible file system was found No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed Reboot and select proper boot device Error Loading operating system BootMGR is missing Boot timeout Boot failed Flashing Cursor in the top left corner of the screen

BIOS and UEFI Firmware are distinct in there respective boot processes. However their error reporting is similar if no bootable media is encountered.

Information
  1. Create the StorageCraft Recovery Environment for Windows (WinPE) x64 ISO. For instructions here is a link to the documentation.
  2. Determine if the firmware booting the restored StorageCraft® ShadowProtect® image is EFI enabled UEFI or legacy enabled UEFI/BIOS. If UEFI, determine if the boot style is legacy or EFI. Below is a list of requirements for each boot style to complete the boot process.

BIOS or Legacy Enabled UEFI Firmware

  • Disk must be initialized as MBR
  • Disk must contain a master boot record
  • Disk must contain an active partition
  • The active partition must contain a boot loader (BCD or NTLDR)
  • The bootloader must point to the correct path in order to direct the load of the Winload.exe

EFI Enabled UEFI Firmware

  • Disk must be initialized as GPT
  • Disk must contain an EFI system partition (ESP) on the same disk as the bootable partition
  • The EFI partition must contain a bootloader (BCD)
  • The bootloader must point to the correct path in order to direct the load of Winload.efi
  1. Change your boot order as needed to boot to the WinPE ISO.
  2. Select Tools, then select Boot Configuration Utility (BCU).
  3. Proceed to BIOS/UEFI System Unable to Boot After StorageCraft Restore for the firmware where the issue was encountered.
